Información

The YMCA Adaptive Recreation Department is a proud partner of Special Olympics where we host various sports for athletes 8 years old to 99 years old.

Volunteers will be placed 1:1 or in a group setting with athletes in the Swimming lanes or assisting in the game of water polo.

Roles of volunteers:

  • Demonstrating proper swim stroke, such as freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, etc.

  • Hand-over-hand assistance to show athletes how to properly perform a swim stroke or skill.

  • Encourage athletes to do their best with high fives, fist bumps, verbal affirmations, etc.

  • Assist in the practice of modified water polo

Volunteers are asked to be present at all times with the participants. Remember, this opportunity is for Special Olympic Athletes to further their skills of swimming NOT for volunteers to play around and take up the athletes time.

Swim experience is preferred but not required. Highly recommended for competitive swim athletes.

How to prepare:

  • Come swim-ready

  • Shorts and a t-shirt or swimwear with full coverage

  • Sunscreen

  • Towel

  • Change of clothing

  • Reusable water bottle (water will not be provided except for filling stations)

Ensure your Give Pulse Account is not listed as "Private." If it is listed as private, you will not receive volunteer hours.

Requirement: Please download the band app to stay updated regarding if there are any changes to your volunteer experience.
