As you've been working to earn points towards the Minnesota Civic Seal, you have identified an issue that is important to you, and you have deepened your understanding of the issue and its root causes. Now it's time to plan your action

A Civic Action Project is a hands-on project that results in a a measurable outcome related to your issue.

Projects may be undertaken individually, with classmates, or in partnership with community members and organizations. You could choose a project from the five Civic Seal Categories (any activity with an asterisk qualifies) or design your own project. Projects should be significant as evidenced by the duration, depth, and/or impact of the level of engagement required.

Plan Your Civic Action
Decide what kind of outcome you are hoping to achieve and then what action is needed to achieve that outcome. Make a simple plan that includes what you want to accomplish, who should be involved, what steps you plan to take and what success will look like. Your plan should be:

  1. Measurable so you can track progress
  2. Achievable given your timeline and resources
  3. Relevant to the root causes of the issue (not just the symptoms)

Types of Outcomes

  • Real-World Change Happens: You see a positive difference in your school or
community like a new recycling program, a student mental health initiative, or improved
    access to resources.
  • People Are More Aware: You raise awareness about an important issue through a campaign, presentation, or social media project that gets people talking and thinking differently.
  • You Influenced Decision-Makers: You meet with school leaders, community members, or elected officials 4 and your ideas help shape a policy, rule, or plan.
  • More People Get Involved: You inspire classmates, teachers, or community members to take action, volunteer, or join your effort.
