Información

Austin Child Guidance Center (ACGC) is a non-profit mental health center for children. Within the past few years we made an addition to the center by adding the Healing Garden. We wanted to utilize the space by providing an aesthetically pleasing environment for our clients to further aide in their healing process. We also feel society has a need for nature and wanted to provide our clients, as well as the community, with a safe place to reconnect with nature and reflect.

The garden is mainly native Texas plants, so they don't need too much attention, as well as a few young trees. We have a rock circle for reflection and conversation and a more solitude sitting area.

We have recently installed a rain harvest system to help us cut back on our city water use. The rain is collected from the roof top and stored in a tank. Underground pipes release the water in the garden beds to help maintain regular watering. However, we need RAIN for this to work!

As a volunteer, we ask that you make at least a semester commitment (Spring: Jan-May) to coming in once a week for about an hour. Of course you are welcome to come in more or stay longer if you'd like to! We are very flexible with the scheduling, we understand things come up and we don't want to add stress to your life! But we do keep a schedule (ex: Sara comes in every Tuesdays 1-2) just so we know when to expect people coming in. If you are unable to make a shift I just ask for you to notify me via email.

Your garden duties would be to hand water the flower beds (we cannot use the sprinklers during the drought), prune back dead plants, and do a little light weeding. We may have garden projects in the future that I will notify you about (e.g., planting new flowers).

We also require you to come in for a 30 minute orientation. At the orientation you will fill out an application and forms for a background check (since we work around children). Then I will give you a tour of the garden and walk you through the duties. At the end we will discuss scheduling.
