    Amaya @ Red Cross

I captured a group of Red Cross students in Reforma, located in northern Oaxaca. During this emotional moment, we asked the students about their lives and any traumas they had experienced. This candid conversation brought many to tears as they shared feelings of depression and isolation, revealing that they had not had anyone to talk to about their struggles. This powerful interaction underscores the significance of our Service-Learning project, which aims to foster open communication and provide emotional support. It aligns with our objectives of building empathy, enhancing communication skills, and promoting cross-cultural understanding, enriching both our academic and personal growth.

    **Personal Reflections:**

Talking with the Red Cross students in Reforma was a deeply moving experience. Through this encounter, I gained profound insights into Mexican and Hispanic cultures, particularly the strong emphasis on community and family support. I also learned about the challenges many young people face, such as feelings of depression and isolation, often compounded by a lack of emotional outlets.

This experience significantly improved my Spanish skills as I engaged in heartfelt conversations, requiring me to listen attentively and respond with empathy. This real-world practice not only enhanced my fluency but also boosted my confidence in using the language in sensitive contexts.

Professionally, this experience underscored the importance of cultural competence and emotional intelligence in healthcare. It taught me that understanding and addressing the emotional needs of patients is as crucial as providing medical care. Personally, I became more empathetic and aware of the struggles others face, which has deepened my compassion and commitment to helping others.

Theoretical concepts from our class, such as cultural competence and patient-centered care, were vividly illustrated through this experience. The service activities provided practical contexts for these theories, deepening my academic understanding and highlighting the importance of empathy and cultural sensitivity in healthcare settings.

Overall, these experiences enriched my personal and professional growth, preparing me to better serve diverse communities and reinforcing the value of compassionate care in my future nursing career.
