For my community service event, I collaborated with a group of UNCW students to remove litter from Wrightsville Beach. After gathering as a group, we dispersed across the beach to cover a wider area, collecting debris and placing it into trash bags provided by the event organizer. Working as a team allowed us to efficiently cover more ground and made the task more manageable for everyone involved. This experience aligns with my personal values and interests, as I enjoy helping others and contributing to meaningful causes. Through this effort, I supported the organization’s goal of maintaining a cleaner beach environment, ultimately enhancing the experience for future visitors. I also learned that the organization’s mission emphasizes environmental stewardship, particularly the belief that “an important part of fishing is the stewardship of the oceans,” which underscores their commitment to preserving coastal ecosystems. This experience has influenced my perspective on leadership and business practices by demonstrating how organized and purposeful initiatives can create a positive impact on the broader community. It highlights the importance of planning and collaboration in executing events that contribute to environmental sustainability and the well-being of others.
Volunteering at the beach cleanup with UNCW was a meaningful and rewarding experience. My primary task was helping clean up the beach, picking up trash and debris to help maintain a healthy and enjoyable environment for both wildlife and the community. As I worked alongside others, I noticed how people naturally collaborated, laughing and talking about the angler club while coordinating to cover different areas of the beach efficiently. It was inspiring to see how a group of individuals could come together and accomplish a shared goal while also enjoying each other’s company.
This experience connected strongly to my personal values of giving back to my community and making a positive impact whenever possible. I felt accomplished and happy knowing my efforts were contributing to a cleaner environment, and it also aligned with my interest in the beach and coastal ecosystems. I learned that organizations like the angler club not only focus on recreational activities like fishing but also prioritize volunteer work to support the local community.
From a leadership perspective, this experience showed me how organizing and motivating a group to complete a simple task can foster teamwork, bonding, and community pride. It reinforced the importance of collaboration and the satisfaction of achieving a shared goal, lessons that will inform my future in business and leadership.
It was a fun experience of walking down Wrightsville Beach and giving back to the community through cleaning up. I met a variety of people there who created a very fun environment while we were helping clean up the beach. It is something that is a great way to feel the UNCW culture of loving the beach and bringing value from cleaning it. This opportunity really showed some of the hidden trash I never noticed on Wrightsville Beach, and it will keep me more open to issues like this in the future. This opportunity was a great way to meet people and help the local community.
