STUDENT ADVOCACY TRAINING DAY - I learned that for the fiscal year 2027 PGCC is 10th in line for prioritization for community college projects. The PGCC project is currently under construction. I also learned that you could keep track of the bills of the capital budget by having a bill number and the name of the bill. This is my first time attending an event that discusses budget material which I found very interesting. We also learned why it is important to learn how scholarship are funded and to advocate for myself as a student with elected officials in my county/state.

So this meeting helped meeting understand what I need to do differently next semester. I am definitely going to stay away from sports events for my service hours. I was short 30 min out of my 15 because of last minute cancelations and no notifications that they were canceled. I called out from work to make sure I attended events that were canceled. Also, I am going to make sure that I jump on them early because there are not enough spots to accommodate all the scholarship students. I will also keep in mind the suggestion given by the presenters to make sure we cancel registration if we know we can't make it. I ensure to organize myself better next semester. I will also make sure to apply for my FAFSA on time for Spring semester.
I don't really post on social media anymore but now I know that when I was heavy using it in the past that regardless of it being deleted the old account that what I posted stays on the internet forever. I am older now, smarter when using it and now appreciate that I can use it for my business. I understand that what I post will stay with me and represents me both on a professional level and as an individual.
EVENT: RESUMES THAT WORK (VIRTUAL PGCC EVENT HELD 11/14)
I attended this resume workshop hoping to get good pointers on what I need to include in my resume and what I need to leave out. I am glad I registered for this event being that I immediately made some corrections on my current resume. One of the things that was mentioned that we should do is include any accomplishments in a school club, community service or volunteer work at an event under the "experience" section. I have mine listed on my resume, but it is not listed under experience, I have it listed under volunteer work in a different section. I have corrected that and added dates. I also learned that we should have a professional email vs a personal email. Never thought of that either. Small changes but still makes an impact.
Today gave me a lot to think about. Although I am enrolled in a transfer program I do not know if it is truly necessary to transfer being that my major is Culinary Arts. I will look into this a little more during my advisor meeting coming up. Good reminders given during today's College Transfer mini session.
I attended the PGCC women's basketball game last night and I enjoyed it. But I wish there was a little more support from PGCC student than what actually showed up. I saw one of the old coaches from Laurel High, students from Bladensburg High and other high school students in attendance more than PGCC students present. It could have just been the day though. We still got a win though and surprised several folks stayed to the end. That's just my personal opinion. I did enjoy the game though. PGCC 59 PTS ON TOP!
It was nice to take part of my first event at PGCC on assisting with registration. I worked with another student at the school to greet all individuals who entered in the back entrance and directed them to the mail lobby. I look forward to volunteering again.
I attend the First Generation Celebration at the Laurel campus being that I will be the first college graduate from my family. I enjoyed meeting other students that will also be first time college graduates. We were able to enjoy great conversation with fellow students, staff and parents who attended. We shared snacks, tried on a cap and gown that said first generation graduates and took group pictures for the PGCC website.
I am excited to hear that the SGA plans to increase PGCC's online presence on different social media outlets. I am super excited about this. I always see other schools very much promoted or shouted out and hope to see our school on the same level. The SGA mentioned there are only 1215 followers right now and hope to increase this number with more use of social media.
I also found it very encouraging to know that PGCC is doing everything possible to protect our immigrant students within the legal boundaries. This will involve working with local authorities, while also protecting immigrant students while on school grounds.
